The Verdict

I set three traps to rid my apartment of these annoying fruit flies last night.
  1. Banana pieces in a glass sealed with saran wrap. A tiny hole at the top.
  2. Top of the 1L bottle was cut and placed upside down (like a funnel). Apple cider inside the bottle.
  3. A glass of wine. I touched the surface of the wine with soapy (dish detergent) finger.

The wine got 4. Apple cider current has 1, and 2 hanging around on the top. But the obvious winner was the banana trap!!! There's gotta be at least a dozen of them in there. I only noticed 1 flying around today. Here's a picture of the best trap.

Pretty sweet!!! The only thing is that I don't know what to do with it now. I guess I'll take it outside to the dumpster and throw out the bananas. The fruit flies can go. I feel kind of bad for them now that they're not flying around and bothering me. So I don't want to kill them if I don't have to. :)

Haha I did the same thing a couple weeks back, what is it about Ann Arbor that has so much Drosophila in it? (the labs? escapees?)

Only I did this in a wide bowl instead of cups (more surface area I figured) and I used beer, which works incredibly well.

I figured the ones that got trapped were definitely not Drosophila master race material, having got themselves so easily duped and all, so I flushed them all down the sink.

So there's not much to do in Ann Arbor huh... I think it's time for you to move to a real city!! haha

Maybe it's the time of the year, we've had a bunch of flies here in Edison as well. Maybe I'll try whiskey though (if it doesn't work I can drink it!) Yeah hard to feel bad if they're gonna die anyways in no more than 20 days or so... especially since you just fed them (which is pretty much what they live for).

heh. that is a funny post. i thought the 2-liter bottle contraption was the best, but boy oh boy, was i wrong! when the fruit fly army storms your kitchen again, would you try the 2-liter top with bananas perhaps???

you're so nice, btw. i would've put the trap in the microwave on super lower than low power for 1 sec. then another sec. then 2. then 3. then 5. then 8. then 13! and YES, you got it, then 21!!! And then finally to the chamber known also as mr. toilet.

Wow, way to popularize your blog with gnat extermination tips! You should sell your glass banana trap idea to the Yankees for those pesky swarms around the pitcher's mound. I guess it's true what they say, "Time flies like an arrow, but fruit flies like a banana."
